Factors indicating adequate breast feeding and minor problems with Breast feeding and its mangement .
Indicators of adequate breast feeding
For the mother :
- Marked filling before breast feeding ( indicate good breast filling ) .
- Let down sensation ( milk flow from one breast while nursing from the other ) .
For the infant :
- Weight gain : 250 gram every 10 days .
- stool : 4 or more times per day
- Urine : 6 times or more .
- Baby feeds at least 8 times per day , and then sleeps for about 2-4 hours (which means satisfaction) .
- Swallowing noises through out the feeding
Problems with breast feeding and its management :
1- Nipple soreness :
Due to improper attachment to the nipple , so proper attachment prevents soreness . We can prevent soreness from the beginning by
nursing for short time . Treatment can be lanolin cream and temporary pumping in severe cases and this will protect the mother .
2- Breast engorgement :
It is fullness in the breast which may be due to maternal illness , infant illness and nursing from one breast only . In this case mother can evacuate her breast or use breast pump in severe cases .
3- Insufficient breast feeding :
This can be managed by hot towels before breast feeding and massage for the breast . Also adequate diet and fluid to the mother .
4- Breast feeding jaundice :
Happens in some infants .
