Factors indicating adequate breast feeding and minor problems with Breast feeding and its mangement .

Indicators of adequate breast feeding

For the mother :

- Marked filling before breast feeding ( indicate good breast filling ) .

- Let down sensation ( milk flow from one breast while nursing from the other ) .

For the infant :

- Weight gain : 250 gram every 10 days .

- stool : 4 or more times per day

- Urine : 6 times or more .

- Baby feeds at least 8 times per day , and then sleeps for about 2-4 hours (which means satisfaction) .

- Swallowing noises through out the feeding

Problems with breast feeding and its management :

1- Nipple soreness :

Due to improper attachment to the nipple , so proper attachment prevents soreness . We can prevent soreness from the beginning by
nursing for short time . Treatment can be lanolin cream and temporary pumping in severe cases and this will protect the mother .

2- Breast engorgement :

It is fullness in the breast which may be due to maternal illness , infant illness and nursing from one breast only . In this case mother can evacuate her breast or use breast pump in severe cases .

3- Insufficient breast feeding :

This can be managed by hot towels before breast feeding and massage for the breast . Also adequate diet and fluid to the mother .

4- Breast feeding jaundice :

Happens in some infants .
